My country isn’t listed. Where do I go?
Most countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, France and Germany, have no consulate in Da Nang. Their citizens are served by the embassy in Hanoi or the consulate-general in Ho Chi Minh City. Check your own government’s travel website for the right office and whether you can book online.

What can a consulate help with?
Services depend on the country and on the type of office. A consulate-general can usually help with:
- New, replacement and emergency passports
- Consular certificates and letters, for example for a Vietnamese work permit or marriage
- Certifying signatures and documents, and legalisation
- Civil-status documents: births, marriages and deaths abroad
- Nationality questions and documents for children
- Help in an emergency, such as arrest, serious illness or a lost passport
- Visas for Vietnamese and other nationals who want to visit that country
Honorary consulates, such as Spain’s and Poland’s, are run part-time and have limited powers. They usually cannot issue passports or official documents; they pass requests on to the embassy and help in emergencies.
The Lao consulate and your visa run
If you are planning a visa run from Da Nang to Lao Bao, you normally don’t need to visit the Lao consulate. Most passports can get a Laos visa on arrival at the Dansavanh checkpoint, and 15 nationalities don’t need a Laos visa at all. Contact the Lao Consulate General only if your nationality cannot get a visa on arrival, or if you want a visa before you travel; call first to confirm current requirements and processing times.
Do I need an appointment?
Often, yes, and honorary consulates see visitors by appointment only. Before you go:
- Check the official website of your embassy or consulate.
- Confirm the current address and opening hours by phone or email.
- Ask whether you need an appointment and which documents to bring.
- Bring your passport, your Vietnamese visa or residence card, and copies.
Note: Da Nang ward names changed in 2025
On 1 July 2025 Da Nang merged its districts and wards, and Hoi An became part of Da Nang City. Many consulate addresses therefore appear under old names online. For example, the Japanese consulate’s former Binh Thuan Ward (Hai Chau District) is now Hoa Cuong Ward, and Khue My Ward (Ngu Hanh Son District), home to the Korean and Chinese consulates, is now Ngu Hanh Son Ward. The street address itself has not changed, so taxis and maps still find it.
